July is the month for a heck of a yarn crawl!

Yes, July isn't exactly the month you'd think about when you think of gathering the peeps around to do a huge yarn crawl, but it's the perfect month - Get Your Knits in Virginia has started its 2009 season, and we're really happy that they invited us to take part!

What is this Get Your Knits in Virginia thing, you ask? Well, a few stores in Southern Virginia (along the I-64 corridor) started this to promote tourism yarn crawls and it seems to have worked so well that they are extending their reach to the ENTIRE state. How does it work? Well, purchase a Get Your Knits bag in one of the participating stores for $20 and you will get a 15% discount on all regularly priced items - except needles, notions and classes - in any of the participating stores! Also, every $25 you spend enters you into a raffle for a $100 gift certificate... not a bad deal, right?

Now, I'm sure you're asking which stores are participating? Well, there are only three stores in this area participating: us (of course), Uniquities in Vienna, and Old Town Needlecrafts in Manassas. However there are 16 other stores participating across the lower half of the state - a great way to get a mini-break weekend and some yarn shopping in! Stores in Abingdon, Bedford, Blacksburg, Charlottesville (2 stores!), Irvington, Powhattan, Raphine, Richmond (2 stores!), Roanoke, Staunton, Virginia Beach (2 stores!), Williamsburg, and Yorktown are joining in the fun this month. If you've never had a chance to visit any of these places, they are worth a visit - there's so much Virginia history in these places that no one will get bored with a visit.

You can only get the discount and be entered into the raffle with the purchase of the bag - and the bags are very limited... so stop in and get one today!

How often have you made a mistake well after Knit Happens was closed and wished you could fix it yourself? Do you understand the principle of what to do but you're just too scared to do it yourself? Want to know the secrets of ripping out multiple rows and picking them up? This is the class. We will learn the basics of fixing simple mistakes, including what to do to avoid ripping out multiple rows in lace.

Or have a piece look great except for a few wonky stitches or rows due to tension changes? Lace Grocery Tote $65
Everyone is going green these days - why not do your part? Knitting a simple lace grocery tote will help reduce your footprint on the environment by cutting back on the plastic bags used which eventually end up in landfills (and avoiding the extra cost of a plastic bag in DC). Knitting it in a sturdy cotton ensures that this tote will be versatile and easy to clean! This is a perfect beginning lace project - you will learn how to read simple charts and what all those funny symbols mean.

Bring to or buy at class: Approximately 200 yards of a fingering or DK weight cotton, US9 needles, US3 DPNs, E hook and tapestry needle

with Olga
Friday, July 24 & 31: 7-8:30pm

Lace Scarf $65
Lace is such a beautiful way to show off gorgeous yarn, but so many people are afraid of trying it because of the charts that are common to lace patterns. This is a great way to get your feet wet with lace - you will work on a good beginning lace pattern (by our own Olga), learning how to read charts, abbreviations, and how to knit an applied border.

Bring to or buy at class: 400 yards of a fingering weight cotton, 24" US3 or US4 circular needles, corresponding DPNs

with Olga
Monday, August 10 & 24: 6-8pm

Short Row Workshop $50
Have you always wondered how to make short rows and what the whole trick to them is? Have you wondered why there are so many methods for them and when do you use them? Let Olga teach you the magic of short rows! Short rows are a great way of creating shaping a garment to accommodate curvy figures as well as creating wonderful geometric masterpieces.

Bring to or buy at class: solid color worsted weight yarn (wool or wool blend preferred), US7 or US8 needle

with Olga
Sunday, August 23: 10am-12pm
Beginning Crochet $50
Crochet is making a huge comeback on the runways in Paris and Rome - and why not? It's a great way to quickly make a garment that will garner lots of praise! If you've ever looked at someone crocheting and thought "That doesn't look too hard, I'd like to learn that," then this is the class for you. You will learn the basics of crochet: how to chain and make several basic stitches. You'll be crocheting up a storm in no time!

Bring to or buy at class: DK or worsted weight smooth cotton, D or E metal hook (if DK), F or G metal hook (if worsted)

My First Crochet Project $50
interlocking circles scarf
Now that you've learned to crochet, use your skills to make an interlocking circle scarf (or wrap, if you'd like it wider)! This cute, trendy scarf will have everyone asking where you got it - and you can proudly say that you made it. A great way to use up leftover yarn!

with Olga
Monday, July 13: 6-8pm
Monday, August 17: 7-9pm
Modern Granny Square Blanket $65
Granny squares are a great way to apply newly acquired crochet skills. However, the old-school granny square blanket can cause flashbacks to the 1970's or just fear in having to seam all those squares together. This is a modern take on the granny square, originally conceived by Joelle at Purl Soho in New York. Olga will show you how to put your own spin on it, to create a thoroughly modern, totally you blanket!

Where is the time going? It's hard to believe that next weekend is the 4th of July! The 4th falls on a Saturday this year, so our schedule is going to look like this:

Friday, July 3: 10:30-7*
Saturday, July 4: Closed
Sunday, July 5: 12-5

*Normally, this Friday would be Knit 'n Nosh, however, with the holiday, we will be pushing it back to the next Friday, July 10.

Classes, classes, classes!

Yes, I am working on that list right now. (Actually, it's done I just need to format it into an email to be sent to our email list first, so if you're not on that list, sign up now. It's on the right sidebar - I'll wait. Done? Good.) The email will go out this evening and will go up on the blog on Monday. Registration will be open for all on Tuesday.

Summer Hours!

Summer is upon us once more and while I hate to admit it, business slows down for yarn shops. So, with that in mind, I am changing our hours for the summer season only (I promise!).

Starting Memorial Day week, our hours will be:

Monday - Closed
Tuesday - 12-5:30pm
Wednesday - 12-9pm
Thursday - 12-5:30pm
Friday - 10:30-7pm
Saturday - 10:30-7pm
Sunday - 12-5pm

Starting Labor Day week, we will go back to our regular hours. (Note: we will not be open on Memorial Day or Labor Day.)

This change will allow us to have earlier classes during the summer months, while allowing us to be open during our busiest hours. Thank you all for understanding.

Have a happy and safe Memorial Day holiday weekend!

We are back up and running!

... or we will be tomorrow. I finally got off of the phone with Verizon and got the internet back up and running again! Thank goodness! I was having flashbacks all weekend to The Time Before the Internet where you had to do everything by hand. Thanks so much everyone for your patience!

With that fire out, now I can work on finalizing the class schedule and sending that email out. What's that you say? You don't get our email newsletter? We can fix that - right from this page. Scroll down the page and you will see our sign-up form. Enter in your information, and you're all set! If you can't remember if you've entered your info in before, go ahead and reenter it - you will only receive one email from me, no matter how many times you put your email address in. (Provided that you've given me the same email each time.) Worried about your information being out there? Don't. The list is private. Only I have access to that info - and I won't sell it to anyone, for any price. So, what are you waiting for? Sign up so you are the first to find out! I'll still post the schedule on here too, so even if you don't sign up, you'll still find out about it! :)
